Be Warned: Internet Use Can Be Addictive

You see them in line at the movies, in their cars at stoplights, seated at the local coffee shop: Internet junkies that can’t put down the computer, iPad, or smartphone. Checking their Facebook status, tweeting their location, cruising Slate for the latest news tidbit. Many label it obsessive, compulsive, an addiction, and new research supports that there are clear signs that it fits the bill of one of those medical diagnoses.

A study conducted by Intersperience, an international consumer research organization, queried 1,000 participants in the U.K., aged 18-65. The participants answered a lengthy questionnaire and were requested to refrain from any internet use for 24 hours.
Probably the biggest stumbling block for the respondents was actually stepping away from the internet. For some, the thought was inconceivable. Others labeled it one of the hardest things they had done, likening it to a nightmare. Some even had symptoms of withdrawal, similar to drugs or alcohol addictions.

Tea Tree Oil: Natural Treatment Alternative

Tea tree oil, also known as melaleuca oil, is often used as an essential oil for a variety of ailments. Extracted from the leaves of a plant native to Australia, the pure form of the oil is very strong and usually diluted for use in cosmetics and medicines. Historically, tea tree oil got its name because the leaves of the melaleuca alternifolia plant were first steeped as a tea. Traditionally, the leaves were used topically for treating burns, lacerations, and infections.

Entrance Fee Extortion

If a Nepali tourist in the Netherlands gets charged double price for a bus fare, this is illegal. Likewise if a Nepali tourist has to pay money to just walk along the main square in Amsterdam, whereas all Dutch people can roam about freely, this would be illegal. And isn’t that the way it is supposed to be?

Dutt to be free in 3 months

PUNE: Incarcerated Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, whose five-year sentence for his involvement in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts was confirmed by the Indian Supreme Court in March 2013, will be freed from prison by March 7, 2016, official sources said here on December 8.
The sources indicated that barring last-minute glitches, Dutt would be released by March 7 after completing the remaining 42-month period of his sentence.

Dutt was acquitted of terror charges under the TADA, but found guilty of possessing illegal arms, acquired ostensibly to protect his family during the communal conflagration that engulfed Mumbai after the demolition of the Babri Mosque on December 6, 1992.

Following the Indian apex court orders, his bail was cancelled and he was ordered to surrender within four weeks, which he complied with on May 16, 2013 and was lodged in Arthur Road Central Jail.
A week later, he was shifted to the Yeravada Central Jail, Pune, where he has been lodged since then and has earned the reputation of being a well-behaved inmate.

Of the five-year sentence, the actor had already served 18 months as an under trial and was required to undergo another 42 months, which is now on the verge of completing.
In between serving time, Dutt was granted either parole or furlough on various grounds, attracting a lot of criticism from various quarters, while some prominent personalities demanded his release from jail.

‘Don 3’ is not being made: Priyanka Chopra

When asked about Don 3, Priyanka said, “Kahan ban rahi hai Don 3? People have been asking me this for six years now. It is not being made guys. Poor Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani. Every six months someone or the other keeps asking them the same question.”

Post the successful outings of Don and Don 2, fans have been eagerly awaiting part three of the hit franchise. While SRK- Priyanka’s pairing was much appreciated, there is no certainty yet if the actors will collaborate together if and when Don 3 happens. Director Farhan Akhtar too had recently mentioned about him not having a script ready for Don 3. Akhtar also revealed that apart from SRK, the other actors would be cast as per the characters that would be written.

How to Maximize the Speed of Your Internet Connection

Part 1 of 4: Checking Your Hardware, Network and ConnectionImage titled Maximize the Speed of Your Internet Connection Step 1Run a speed test. Before you get down and dirty with your hardware and computer settings, check to see what kind of speeds you are getting and compare that to the advertised speeds for your service. There are a variety of speed test sites on the net, just search for "speed test" in Google and pick the top few results.

Are web pages taking longer to load than they used to? Are your download speeds not matching the speed you should be getting? There are a lot of factors involved when it comes to your internet connection. Luckily there's a lot you can do to try to improve your performance, and you could see improvements in just a few minutes.

Are you Pregnant! Now What?

At one point or another in our lives, most women have found themselves wandering through the aisles of a local pharmacy, pouring over brands of pregnancy tests, wondering which one will give us the news we are seeking. And with bated breath, soaring pulse rate, and sweaty palms, we dash home to pee on the infamous stick. It is no question the longest three minutes of our lives as we wait for the lines or symbols to appear and determine our fate. The results bearing little proof to us, we often leave immediately after, go back to the pharmacy, and buy five more tests to validate our findings.

Top 5 Prenatal Vitamins

To help ensure a successful pregnancy and healthy baby, doctors and midwives typically recommend that women take a daily prenatal vitamin, beginning as early as possible in the pregnancy. HealthNews expert Constance Rock prefers food-based prenatal vitamins, taken as early as preconception (for those who are actively planning or trying to have a baby).

Food-based prenatal vitamins contain folic acid and the nutrients that are in a form bioavailable to the cells in your body. The absorption is high compared to a synthetic vitamin and you will most likely not get digestive upset or nausea from it. (Something to think about as the six-week mark nears, the time in which most women who get morning sickness remark that it starts.) It is also good to ensure that the vitamins have sufficient iodine, which is critical to the developing fetus.

Holy Basil: Natural Remedy for Stress

Holy Basil: Natural Remedy for Stress

Even though summer is just around the corner and the sun is shining more helping each and every one of us get our happy intake of vitamin D, stress still hides behind the sun’s rays and especially in these terrible economic times, stress relief is going to be hard to come by.
Not only will holy basil reduce your stress level and help to calm those possibly- mploding emotions, this helpful herb will add to your immunity levels and protect you from other serious bodily complications in the future.

The Power of Peppermint - Herbal Medicine

At the mention of peppermint, candy canes and ice cream comes to mind. But did you know that peppermint is also an age-old herbal medicine that has been used to treat a wide range of abdominal woes? The oil extracted from the peppermint plant contains a host of compounds, but the most abundant and perhaps the most pharmacologically important is menthol.

Studies have shown peppermint oil to be fairly effective at relieving irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a collection of symptoms that includes abdominal pain and cramping, bloating, constipation and diarrhea that affects 5 to 20 percent of the population. One explanation is that the oil—especially the menthol—blocks calcium channels, which has the effect of relaxing the “smooth” muscles in the walls of the intestines. Recently, Alex Ford, a McMaster University researcher, concluded that instead of popular over-the counter drugs, peppermint oil should be the first line of defense against IBS.

Top 10 Multi-Tasking Exercises

SUMMARY: Challenge different muscle groups at the same time with our top ten multi-tasking exercises.

Get back to basics with these ten easy-to-do multi-tasking exercises. Not only will your workout be more efficient, you’ll work different muscles simultaneously, tone your body faster, and increase strength. Enjoy!
1. Push-ups
There’s a reason people are still doing these old-school moves. They work your chest, triceps and core. Be sure to keep your abs engaged and focus your gaze on the floor as you slowly lower and push your body up and down. Inhale as you lower, exhale as you gently press up. Your hands should be a few inches wider than your shoulders.
2. Squats
Work your glutes, hamstrings and quads with squats. Imagine sitting in a chair that’s just a little too far behind you and don’t go lower than 90 degrees. Be careful not to hyperextend your knees.
3. Lunges
Another great exercise for your glutes, hamstrings and quads, lunges also help improve balance and work one leg at a time. Be sure to keep your torso upright and don’t hyperextend your knees as you lower your body slowly.
4. Plank
Plank works your abs and lower back while helping shoulder alignment. Be sure to keep your wrists directly under your shoulders and try not to arch your back.
5. Bicep/Hammer curl rotations
This movement works the entire bicep. Start with your elbows at your sides, palms facing up, one weight in each hand. As you raise the weights towards your shoulders, rotate the palms so that they face each other. Slowly lower the weights and rotate the palms up. Be sure not to use the wrists to rotate the weights.
6. Lateral shoulder raises
Lateral, or side raises, help tone the shoulders and build the muscles in your back. As you raise the weights up to shoulder height with your palms facing down, be sure to keep your abs tight and your shoulder blades drawn together and down.
7. Lateral Leg Lifts
This is an amazing way to tone your glutes, target the outer thighs and obliques, and improve balance. Balance on one leg while slowly raising and lowering the opposite leg out to the side. Be sure both hips and shoulders are facing in the same direction, keep your chest open, and try not to swing your leg. Focus on slow movements.
8. Bicycle crunches
Also known as “criss-cross”, this ab move works the lower abs, obliques and helps hamstring flexibility. Start on your back with knees bent, feet in the air. Crunch up and hold. Twist your left shoulder towards your right knee as you extend and straighten your left leg. Return to a neutral position before switching sides. Keep the legs long, toes pointed, and abs engaged.
9. Superman/woman
Start on the floor on your stomach with your arms reaching out in front of you. Very slowly, contract the abs and raise your arms, head, chest off the ground while contracting the glutes and lifting your legs a few inches off the ground. Focus your gaze on the floor, reach your arms and legs long, and hold for 10 seconds. Rest and repeat. Try to imagine your arms and legs reaching towards opposite walls.
10.  Wall squat
Stand against a wall, bring your feet a few feet away from the wall, and slowly slide down the wall as if you’re sitting in an imaginary chair. Make sure your knees aren’t bent past your toes. Hold the squat as long as you can and keep your abs engaged. This is really challenging and works the entire lower body.

More Than 100 Million Americans Live with Undertreated Chronic Pain

At least 116 million Americans suffer from serious chronic pain, and for many of them the suffering is not only undertreated, but is also preventable. The information was revealed by new report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) that addresses the outcry for help in what is described as a “public health crisis” of pain.

There are countless sources of chronic pain that range from back pain and fibromyalgia to arthritis, and from multiple sclerosis to cancer. For the nation, the costs of the unending aching, throbbing pain are great, as billions of dollars are sacrificed to cover medical costs, losses in productivity, and time missed from work.
Chronic pain, by definition, is pain that continues for 30 to 60 days or longer, and in many cases the long-term suffering can drag on for years.

Although the IOM has estimated the number of Americans who suffer from chronic pain in excess of 100 million, the organization acknowledged that they may have actually underestimated just how many people live with chronic pain. This is because their data did not account for the millions living in such environments as nursing homes, didn’t include members of the military, nor could it include the numerous daily additions to this ever-increasing population of people who hurt.
According to Dr. Philip Pizzo, dean of the Stanford School of Medicine, and chairman of report committee, one-third of Americans experience chronic pain. The costs of the ailment, he noted, “Is more than we pay as a nation on cardiovascular disease and cancer…. Pain is an experience that affects virtually every one of our citizens…and can become a disease itself.”

The report, titled “Relieving Pain in America: A Blueprint for Transforming Prevention, Care, Education, and Research,” points out the failure of the nation’s health care system to adequately treat the masses who suffer from chronic pain, and focuses on the need for a “cultural transformation” of the methods by which the U. S. diagnoses and treats patients who deal with pain and it’s management.

Govt fails to sign fuel deal with China

December 27,
The much-awaited Nepal-China petroleum trade deal could not be signed at the government-level during the official visit of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Kamal Thapa to Beijing last week, as the Chinese authorities failed to decide on Nepal’s proposal to waive tax on fuel export.
Earlier this month, Nepal had requested China to waive tax on export of fuel so that the country could purchase fuel at the international market rates.
As Nepal Oil Corporation and China government-owned China National United Oil Corporation (PetroChina) had signed a memorandum of understanding to pave the way for petroleum trade between China and Nepal on October 28 in Beijing, it was expected that petroleum import from China at a commercial scale would begin at the earliest.

Content ruled B’wood box office this year

NEW DELHI: Star power sells, but content is the original king. This stood true for Bollywood’s roaster-coaster 2015, a year full of films with strong and unique storylines making their small presence felt in a big way.
The stars, barring Salman Khan, somehow failed to rake in much moolah, say trade pundits, pointing out how only five of the nearly 172 Hindi film releases surpassed the psychological INRs100 crore ($15 million) mark at India’s domestic box office. And this duly included Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale. One can’t say the year has been “bad” for Bollywood, says trade analyst Taran Adarsh.

Problems could appear in SLC letter grading system

KATHMANDU: Stating that the letter grading system in the School Leaving Certificate Examinations (SLC) introduced by the Ministry of Education was ill-prepared, educationists have claimed that implementation part of the new system was challenging.

The Ministry on Thursday had decided to implement the letter grading system in the SLC examinations- a concept proposed by the World Bank meant for reforms in education.

Educationist Dr Bidyanath Koirala argued that the new step was taken in the name of improving education’s quality under the duress of the Word Bank without studying Nepal’s educational system.
He said that the grading system would be irrelevant if the students getting lower grades were not able to earn the higher studies in their desired subjects.
